Laser marking is also referred to as laser etching. Unlike conventional etching, laser etching needs no masks or chemicals. Some people just call it laser etching and others call it laser engraving but basically the technique uses a computer-controlled laser beam to mark a surface. It didn't take long for the engraving industry to notice the new lasers and soon lasers were being used for a wide variety of industrial applications including welding, heat-treating, etching and engraving.
They are used in shops for their accurate carving abilities especially where intricate engraving and cutting is required. The come with computer software that makes it a simple and rapid process to program specific designs and patterns. The operator can input just about any design into the software program that results in elaborate engravings, incredibly detailed images and three dimensional effects.
When you first think about making your own CNC Router the first thing you will need to do is decide on a design. There are basically two types of designs that you will have to choose from. Either you want one with a stationary gantry and a mobile bed, or you want one with a mobile gantry and a stationary bed. There are advantages to both types.
Laser cutting include easier work holding and reduced contamination of work piece. It provides greater levels of precision since the laser beam does not wear during the process. Moreover some materials are also very difficult or impossible to cut by more traditional means thus in that case laser cutting is the best option available to work things out. A mechanical cutter can only cut detail as fine as the diameter of the smallest available tool. A laser cutter by contrast can cut to the width of the laser beam, measured in hundredths of a millimeter. Mechanical cutting leaves a rougher edge finish to the cut surface than laser cutting, which need additional operations to achieve the standard of finish achieved with a laser. It leaves a polished, finished edge requiring no further work.
In this difficult economy, many businesses are struggling to keep their doors open, let alone make a profit. So when the owner of a CNC router is told by the manufacturer that they need to replace their old CNC machine or mortgage their home to update the old one, it can be a hard pill to swallow. Many times, this problem can be summed up in two words: CNC retrofit.
